10 Small Ways to Waste Less and Treasure More

What if the gift box was worth keeping, too?

At The Virtuosi Antiquarium, we like the idea of less waste without less pleasure: thoughtful gifts, interesting objects and good things staying in circulation.

Here are ten places to start.

1. Make the wrapping part of the gift

Use a clean, sound decorative tin for a small non-food gift instead of disposable wrapping. Our “Born To Be Wild” motorcycle tin could become part of the present, then a keepsake box. Tie on a saved ribbon rather than sticking tape to its decoration. The Virtuosi Antiquarium

2. Check your cupboards first

Before buying a gift box, storage container or decorative piece, see what you already own. Reusing something on hand avoids buying an unnecessary replacement.

3. Look for something already made

When you do need an item, consider second-hand. Reuse can reduce waste and demand for new production—especially when it replaces a planned new purchase rather than becoming an extra purchase. EPA NSW

4. Look beyond the shiny packaging

Check materials, construction and condition. Will it withstand its intended use? Can it be repaired? Neither “new” nor “vintage” automatically means well-made. Choose something you would want to keep.

5. Do not mistake pre-owned for worn out

Some treasures have only been displayed. Our 1980s Marilyn Monroe mugs, for example, were shelf and cabinet displayed, not used for drinking. Their bright, unmarked condition shows what careful ownership can preserve. A previous owner need not mean a tired-looking gift. The Virtuosi Antiquarium

6. Choose for lasting interest

Think about the music, stories or hobbies someone has enjoyed for years. Check what they already own. For clothing, confirm measurements. Aim for something wanted—not another object that immediately needs rehoming.

7. Question the extra layers

New purchases can arrive with boxes, plastic inserts and decorative wrapping. Choose less unnecessary packaging where possible. Second-hand purchases still need protective shipping materials; they are not automatically packaging-free. DCCEEW

8. Keep a wrapping drawer

Save usable gift bags, ribbons, tissue and clean packing paper. Try a scarf you already own as wrapping. Reuse first, then check local recycling guidance for anything that cannot be used again. Glen Eira City Council

9. Care before replacing

Follow care instructions, store things properly and investigate suitable repairs before replacing an item. With delicate collectables, ask a specialist rather than experiment. Keeping something sound is different from making it look artificially new.

10. Let good things find another owner

When clothes no longer fit or interests change, sell, swap, gift or donate suitable items. Ask charities what they accept. Something no longer right for you may be exactly right for someone else. EPA NSW

For us, this is part of the pleasure of collecting: recognising what still has something to offer.
